“They locked into the process all year” – Golden Eagles’ Historic Season Comes to a Close at State Against Oak Ridge

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After becoming the first-ever Golden Eagles’ baseball squad to make it all the way to the TSSAA State Tournament, Shelbyville Central (31-11, 5-3) saw its record-breaking 2026 campaign come to an end against Oak Ridge, 6-1, on Wednesday morning.

“It was a good year,” Shelbyville Central Head Coach Chase Jones said postgame, “I’m proud of our kids. They locked into the process all year, we just came up short this week, but this is down to the last eight. This is the best of the best, and there is little room for mistakes. We didn’t play our best yesterday, and the pitcher we faced today was pretty effective. The good news is, now we have something to go back and look at to lock into the process even more heading into next season. There’s no guarantee that we get back to this point, so we’re going to have to do everything that we can next year to get back. This year, we played loose. There were no expectations coming in, and we weren’t caught up in results, and we can’t get caught up in results next season either. We’ll need to lock into the process starting in our summer workouts and get ourselves in a position to hopefully get back here and be able to compete next year for a state title.”

On the mound, Oak Ridge threw its two-time defending Class AAAA Mr. Baseball winner, Michael Teasley, and he was exceptional for the Wildcats. The Tennessee Volunteers commit pitched 6.2 innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out 13 batters on 117 pitches. He worked around two fielding errors, and two separate jams where the bases were loaded.

For Shelbyville Central, Brody Thomas got the start, pitching 3.0 innings and giving up six runs – four earned – on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts on 57 pitches. Stephen Bobo came on in relief, pitching the final 3.0 innings and giving up zero runs, three hits, and zero walks while striking out six on 62 pitches.

Shelbyville Central actually took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Bobo hustled out an infield single with one out, and then after an error by the first baseman on a pickoff attempt, the Golden Eagles’ centerfielder managed to reach third base safely. This allowed Blake Bone to single on an infield hit to Teasley and drive home Bobo from third for the one-run advantage.

Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, Oak Ridge would respond with a six-run explosion in the bottom part of the inning. A leadoff single from Dirige, an error at third on a bunt from Brooks Poteet allowed both runners to be safe, and then a single from Warren East on another bunt loaded the bases with nobody out.

Parker Free flied out to Bobo to drive home Dirige from third, and then Teasley slapped a 2-RBI single into center to take a 3-1 lead. Joseph Webb was hit by a pitch, then Jaiden Cheverton singled home another run. After a passed ball scored Webb, Cheverton came home to score the Wildcats’ sixth run of the inning on an RBI-single from Kipton Feagan.

The Golden Eagles threatened to get back in the game by loading the bases in the top of the fourth inning, but Teasley – who was touching 93 MPH while consistently sitting around 90 MPH on his fastball – struck out Miles McCullough to end what turned out to be the final true threat by Shelbyville Central.

“This team was special because of how they bought into the process and the ‘win this pitch’ mentality,” Jones said about his group, “It was something like 20 ball games over the course of this year that we came from behind to win, and that’s just an example of what their grit and what their heart is. They played their tails off all year, stayed locked in to every pitch, and kept themselves in most ball games to be able to win most of them at the end. We came up a little short here, and I am disappointed to lose, but I’m not disappointed in the kids, or where we are at, or where we are going. I’m very excited about the future of our program. We’ve just got to get better. We not only want to come to the Spring Fling, we want to win the thing, and there’s no guarantee that we’ll get back here next year, but if we get back to this spot, we want to be able to compete and win it.”

At the plate for the Golden Eagles, Stephen Bobo led off going 3-for-4, Bone went 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Case Davis finished 1-for-3.

Shelbyville Central finishes the 2026 season as the District 6-AAAA Champions, the Region 3-AAAA Champions, and the first team in program history to make it all the way to the State Tournament. The Golden Eagles graduate zero seniors from this year’s team, and are poised to be a dangerous squad that could make a lot more noise come 2027.
