SUMMERTOWN, Tenn. – After losing the District 9-AA title at home against Summertown a week ago, the Community Viqueens (29-8, 7-0) took down Summertown (29-9, 6-2), 5-2, on Wednesday to win the Region 5-AA Championship.

After her success against the Lady Eagles in the district tournament, Ryleigh Lassiter got the start in the circle for the Viqueens and pitched good enough to give her offense a chance. Lassiter went 3.0 innings, giving up just two runs – one earned – on five hits and two walks on 51 pitches. She exited with Community tied at 2-2 into the bottom of the fourth, making way for Annie Prince to finish out the game. Prince pitched the final 4.0 innings, giving up zero runs, three hits, and three walks while striking out six batters on 68 pitches to record the win.

Community initially trailed 2-0 heading into the third inning after the hometown Lady Eagles scratched across one run in each of the first two innings. However, the Viqueens plated one run in the top of the fourth to trim the lead in half, 2-1. Prince worked a one-out walk, then Lassiter came through with a two-out line drive over the head of the center fielder to reach the wall and score Taylor Harris from first.

In the fifth, Kamryn Farrell grounded a single back up the middle to lead off, then Mattie Maxey also lined a single back up the middle against Summertown starter, Mary Parson. Gracie Daniel smoked a single through into left to load the bases with nobody out, then Haylee Webb came through with another clutch postseason hit. Webb got ahold of one to the left field wall for a bases clearing double that gave Community their first lead of the night at 3-2. This also knocked Parson from the game, forcing Summertown to bring in Olivia Woods.

After Hayden Moore’s RBI groundout extended the lead to 4-2, Alana Tate drove home the fifth and final run of the game on an RBI-double into center that drove home Hayden Moore from second.

Prince would shut out Summertown in the final three frames to secure the win for Community.

At the plate for the Viqueens, Anna Haskins led off going 1-for-3 with a double, Kamryn Farrell went a perfect 3-for-3, and Maxey finished 1-for-4. Daniel was 2-for-3 with a walk, Webb went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Moore went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Alana Tate went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Lassiter finished 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

With the win, the Viqueens will host the Class AA State Sectional round against Stewarts County for the right to play in their third State Tournament appearance in four years. That game will be held on Friday night with first-pitch TBD.
