Viqueens Finish as District 9-AA Runners-Up

UNIONVILLE, Tenn. – After a brilliant pitching performance from Community’s Ryleigh Lassiter to give the Viqueens (26-8, 7-0) a chance to come through the loser’s bracket, the No. 2 seeded Summertown Lady Eagles (28-7, 6-2) were able to put together a 15-run fourth inning to make a statement in Friday’s upset win over the top-seeded Viqueens, 22-6 after five innings.

In the first game of Friday’s eventual doubleheader, The Viqueens took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. First, Kamryn Farrell walked, then Mattie Maxey was hit by a pitch before Gracie Daniel grounded Farrell over to third on a fielder’s choice for the second out. Daniel then swiped second while drawing a throw into centerfield from Greenley Taylor that allowed Farrell to score the first run of the night.

Neither team scored until the fourth when the Viqueens put together a three-spot to take a 4-0 lead. Daniel led off with a double then an E6 on a Haylee Webb ground ball allowed Daniel to score the second run of the game. Then, Annie Prince launched a bomb to right-center field that went over the wall and resulted in a 2-run home run to grow the lead to four runs.

Community would not score again, but Lassiter gave up just a single run in both the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win and set up a winner-take-all Game 8. Lassiter threw all 7.0 innings on 92 pitches, giving up just two runs – one earned – on six hits and four walks to earn the win.

At the plate for Commnity, Farrell went 1-for-3, Maxey was 1-for-1 with a walk, and Daniel finished 2-for-3 with a double. Haylee Webb was 1-for-3, Annie Prince went 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBIs, and a walk, and Alana Tate finished 1-for-2 with a walk.

With Prince already having thrown 230 pitches during the week – including 90 the previous day in a win over Chapel Hill – Viqueens’ Head Coach Cam Farrell decided to start Lassiter again in the second and final game of the night.

This time, Lassiter managed to get to the fourth inning with the Viqueens trailing just 3-1, but the Lady Eagles then began to take advantage of her growing pitch count on the day. Lassiter was eventually knocked from the game in the fourth inning. She was tagged for eight earned runs on nine hits and four walks on 117 pitches against a stout Summertown lineup, and she received a nice ovation for her spectacular performance in the first game of the night.

Summertown went on an improbable run at the plate, scoring a whopping 15 runs in the top of the fourth against three different pitchers to take a commanding 18-1 lead. After plating four more in the top of the fifth to take a 22-1 advantage, the Viqueens showed some fight at the plate, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth before the run-rule was triggered.

Community committed four errors in the field and tallied six hits compared to the Lady Eagles’ no errors and 13 hits. Summertown also worked 11 walks to the Viqueens’ six.

At the plate for Community, Anna Haskins led off going 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Farrell went 1-for-2, and Haylee Webb finished 0-for-3 with two RBIs. Prince was 1-for-2, Taylor Harris went 1-for-1, and Alana Tate finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.

Community now travels to District 10-AA Champion Lewis County on Monday in a win-or-go-home Region 5-AA Semifinal. First-pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
