Viqueens’ Haskins Walks Off Chapel Hill; Punches Ticket to District Championship

UNIONVILLE, Tenn. – The Community Viqueens (27-3-2, 8-0) used some late-game heroics at the plate from Anna Haskins to walk-off Chapel Hill (19-9, 6-2), 2-1, on Wednesday to advance to the District 9-AA Championship Game.

After Kamryn Farrell laced a one-out double into the outfield, Haskins stepped up and put the ball in play, allowing the winning run to reach home plate from third to send the Lady Rockets to the loser’s bracket just one game away from elimination.

Annie Prince started in the circle for the Viqueens, throwing a complete 7.0 innings while giving up just a single earned run – a solo home run by Taylor Moreland – and two hits while striking out 14 batters with zero free passes on 94 pitches. Community did commit one error in the field, but Prince was able to work around it and keep the runner from scoring.

Moreland got the start for Chapel Hill, pitching 6.1 innings and giving up two runs with one earned on six hits and two walks while striking out five batters on 95 pitches. The Lady Rockets committed a pair of errors in the field with one of them leading to a run.

Neither team scored in the first inning, but then Community took an early lead in the bottom of the second. Carlie Blanton led off by getting on base, and as the catcher, Victoria Wells came on to run for Blanton. Wells swiped second to get into scoring position, and two batters later, Annie Prince drove Wells home from third to give the Viqueens a 1-0 lead.

With Prince on the mound and looking like her usual dominant self, Community might have started to feel like the one run would be enough to win. However, in the top of the fourth inning, Moreland ran into one, driving it over the wall for the Lady Rockets first run of the game to tie the game at 1-1.

Prince got back to work, blanking Chapel Hill for the final three innings to allow her offense to have a chance to retake the lead. They eventually did in the bottom of the seventh after Haskins drove home Farrell to walk it off.

Haskins finished 1-4 at the plate for the Viqueens, Carlie Blanton went 1-2 with a walk, and Gracie Daniel went 1-3 with a double. Taylor Wessner went 1-2 with a walk, Prince finished 1-3 with an RBI, and Kamryn Farrell finished 1-3 at the plate.

For the Lady Rockets, Taylor Moreland went 1-3 at the plate with her solo HR while Marley Chilton recorded the only other hit for the visitors, finishing 1-3 while striking out twice.

With the win sending the hosts to the district title game, Community also clinches a spot in the Region 4-AA Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season. The Viqueens will play host to either Cascade or Chapel Hill on Friday night.

Chapel Hill now faces a win-or-go-home situation and will host Cascade once again in a rematch from Monday where the Lady Rockets won, 6-1, on Thursday for the right to qualify for the District 9-AA Championship Game. First-pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
