This year marks the 15th anniversary of Middle Tennessee Spay and Neuter Clinic which is working to combat pet overpopulation in middle Tennessee. Located on Union Street, they do this by offering low-cost surgeries and vaccinations, thanks to private donors, grants, and fundraisers.
Helping animals has been a passion of executive director, Kimberly Warren, for many years. She explains, “Reducing pet overpopulation is a major piece of the puzzle. Less animals being born means less homeless animals fending for themselves, starving on the streets, being injured, or becoming prey. It helps to end the needless suffering of animals.”
In recent years, grants have started to favor animal treatment rather than animal sterilization programs. It is more important than ever for people to donate and participate in the fundraising for the high-quality high volume spay and neuter clinics like MTSNC.
A favorite public fundraising event is coming up on June 14, Paws for a Cause 5k Run 1 Mile Walk. It is a dog friendly event and spectators are welcome. Registration information can be found on www.mtsnc.org under upcoming events.
Last year was an all-time high of 3,528 dogs and cats spayed and neutered at MTSNC. Since doors opened in January of 2010, there have been a total of 41,000 surgeries.
It can be misunderstood that only low-income families can take advantage of this service. In actuality, anyone can have their pets or community cats spayed or neutered at a low rate. However, specials may require people to prove their low-income status. Specials in the past have been Black Cat Day, Spay Day, Males in May, and more.
Following MTSNC’s Facebook page and website can keep people in the loop on specials, needed supplies, upcoming events and interesting facts about how sterilization can help an animal and their owner. Pets living longer and behaving better are just two of the reasons every pet owner should make an appointment.
“We have an awesome, experienced, staff working at MTSNC. Our veterinarians are specially trained in high volume surgeries. The doctors and staff are all compassionate and dedicated to our cause. Dr. Alexandra Logan, our medical director, is a terrifically talented surgeon with many years of experience in her field.” Warren added.
